Worship SPL: Church Volume

Worship SPL: Church Volume is an iPhone app for church sound teams. It logs worship service sound levels, shares a one-page PDF report with your pastor and team, and shows how much stage sound reaches the seats before the mains are added.

How to use

Stage Volume Check

Use it during rehearsal. Put the iPhone on a stand at the center of the seating area, at ear height. Have the band repeat the same loud section while you mute and unmute only the mains at the times shown. The app shows, by frequency band, how much the mains add on top of the sound from the stage.

Service Monitor

Use it during the service. It shows the 15-minute average level and how far it is from the limit you set. You can log each service and share a one-page PDF report.

Position Correction

If your mixer is not in the middle of the main seating area, measure a correction once with pink noise. The app then estimates the level at the center of the seating area from measurements at the mixer.

Pink noise file

For Position Correction, play this file through the mains from the computer at the mixer: pinknoise.wav (3 minutes, 48 kHz). You can also share it from the app.

Calibration

Without calibration, levels are relative to this iPhone's microphone. To see levels in dB(A) and the difference from your limit, calibrate once with a sound level meter (Setup on the home screen).
